What is a Teppanyaki Grill? What is Hibachi Grill? Recipes Included!

While choosing your best electric griddle, the questions one should pose are: “What is a teppanyaki grill?” and “What is hibachi grill?” While both forms are Japanese styles of BBQ cooking, there are clear differences between the two.

What Is a Teppanyaki Grill and Hibachi Grill? Where Are They Used?

Hibachi vs Teppanyaki

What Is a Teppanyaki Grill?

Do you know what is a Teppanyaki grill?

Teppanyaki grills are found in many Japanese restaurants with a large hot metal plate used for cooking food in front of guests. The word “Teppanyaki” reflects its cooking style.

In Japanese, “teppan” means iron plate and “yaki” means grilled or pan-fried. The key features of teppanyaki grills are that they are typically gas flame heated flat surfaces around which guests are seated.

What Is Hibachi Grill?

Hibachi grills use small and portable heating devices made of cast iron in an open-grate design.

In Japanese, the word “Hibachi” literally means “fire bowl”, referring to a round, open-top container designed for burning charcoal or wood for heat. Modern hibachi grills come in different shapes, configurations, and sizes, and many are electrically heated.

Both teppanyaki and hibachi cooking involve grilling food over an open flame, making them distinctive for their performative aspects. They both allow guests to watch the grilling process so that they can witness the grilling skills of the chefs or the people who prepare their meals.

However, hibachi normally does not require cooking by chefs, it can be done by each individual preparing it on their own.

Common Teppanyaki / Hibachi Grills

There are four common types of Teppanyaki Hibachi Griddles, and FANCY offers all of them. Let us look at their features in detail, and see what FANCY offers.

● Gas Teppanyaki Griddle
● Electric Teppanyaki Griddle
● Smokeless Teppanyaki Equipment
● Outdoor Teppanyaki Grills

FANCY Food Service Equipment Co., Ltd. has been in operation since 1975. It has been providing commercial kitchen equipment and specializes in grill design, planning, manufacturing, and maintenance and repair. Its teppanyaki grills are sold in over 30 countries and have earned the support and loyalty of worldwide users.

1. Gas Teppanyaki Griddle
The Gas Teppanyaki Griddle uses natural gas or propane gas tank to deliver perfect heat control over the grill plate. It heats up quickly and evenly. Some models come with only one burner, while some with multiple independent burners to increase cooking capacity.

At FANCY, Gas Teppanyaki Griddles consist of two kinds of burners: the “round burner” with only one temperature control, and the “pipe burner” with 4~8 controls depending on the plate dimension. An exhaust vent hood is required if used for indoor cooking.

2. Electric Teppanyaki Griddle
An Electric Teppanyaki Griddle has only one heat source, and it takes time to heat up the plate. Once the temperature is reached, the heat is concentrated on the center plate directly above the heat source.

The area surrounding the center plate will be used as a warming zone to get the food ready before serving/plating.

At FANCY, the Electric Teppanyaki Griddle can be controlled by an EGO switch or an Auto-Temperature Control system. An exhaust vent hood is required if used for indoor cooking.

3. Smokeless Teppanyaki Equipment
As the name suggests, Smokeless Teppanyaki Grills create little to no smoke while cooking. When in use, no range hoods are required during operation. This grill has its own integrated downdraft ventilation and filtration system.
Since no pollution is created, it creates a safe and healthy cooking environment for the chefs and guests.

FANCY’s Smokeless Teppanyaki Grill features plug-and-use mobility with lockable wheels. Its low-noise exhaust fan incorporates a health-minded design with the aim of eliminating any greasy smell.

4. Outdoor Teppanyaki Grills
When choosing an outdoor grill, the cooktop or other parts of the griddle should be weather-resistant and non-rusting materials. Stainless steel is a more popular option.

At Fancy, we normally use SUS 304, but when requested, we use SUS316 for the entire outdoor grill body construction for beach resorts or any restaurant nearby the ocean.

The “teppan” is made of non-rust material to ensure a long duration on rainy days or in high humidity environments.
